At the edge of the world, where land meets the restless Tasman sea, the lion rock rises from Piha’s black sands beneath a sky ablaze at dusk.
 
In Māori tradition, it is a kaitiaki - a guardian sent by the gods, some say once a taniwha that became stone to protect the coast. Its spirit is ancient, bound to land and sea.
 
Below, waves thunder and wind carries echoes of karakia and memory. The black sand holds the traces of those who came before. In this moment between light and darkness, it stands firm against time and tide, watching, remembering, protecting.
